Parking Sensors vs Reversing Camera: Which Should You Fit?
If your car did not come with parking aids, you have two ways to fix that: fit parking sensors, or fit a reversing camera. Most people assume the camera is simply the better option because it is newer technology. That is not quite right. They solve different problems.
What parking sensors actually do
Parking sensors are small ultrasonic transducers fitted into the bumper. They send out a pulse, measure how long it takes to bounce back, and beep faster as you get closer to something.
What they are good at: detecting things you cannot see at all. Low bollards, a tow bar on the car behind you, a kerb, a child’s bike lying on the driveway. The sensor does not care whether the object is in your line of sight.
What they are bad at: telling you what the object is or exactly where. You get a beep, not a picture. Soft or angled surfaces sometimes reflect the pulse away and go undetected. Heavy rain and thick mud on the bumper degrade them.
What a reversing camera actually does
A camera gives you a live picture of what is behind you, usually with guide lines showing your path.
What it is good at: showing you exactly what is there. Reversing onto a trailer coupling, judging distance to a wall, checking there is nothing behind you before you move at all. It also handles the classic blind spot directly behind a high-tailgate SUV or ute, where a small child is completely invisible from the driver’s seat.
What it is bad at: anything outside the lens field of view, and anything at night in a poorly lit area if the camera has weak low-light performance. A dirty lens blinds it entirely. And crucially, it only helps if you look at it.

So which should you fit?
Fit a camera if you have a high tailgate, a ute, a van or an SUV where rear visibility is genuinely poor. Or if you tow, reverse onto a trailer, or park in tight spaces where you need to judge distance precisely rather than just know something is nearby.
Fit sensors if your rear visibility is reasonable but you keep clipping kerbs and bollards, or if you want a warning that works whether or not you happen to be looking at a screen.
Fit both if the vehicle is large, carries passengers regularly, or lives somewhere with kids and driveways. The camera shows you the situation, the sensors catch what falls outside the frame. This is what most modern cars come with from the factory, and there is a reason for that.
The practical difference at install time
Parking sensors require drilling the rear bumper to a precise size and spacing, then wiring the control module and a speaker or display into the cabin. Done well it is invisible. Done badly you have crooked holes in a painted bumper that cannot be undone.
A camera requires no drilling on most vehicles, since it mounts in or near the number plate housing, but it does require a full cable run from the rear of the vehicle to the dash, and a screen capable of accepting a video input.
If you are fitting both at once, do them in the same visit. The trim comes apart once instead of twice.
