Car Stereo Not Working? How to Find the Fault
A car stereo that has stopped working is usually not a broken stereo. Most of the time it is power, a fuse, or a connection. Here is how to work out which, in the order that finds the fault fastest.
Nothing at all: no lights, no sound
This is a power problem, not a stereo problem, and it is the most common fault by a wide margin.
Check the fuses. Two of them. The one in the fusebox for the radio circuit, and often a second one on the back of the head unit itself. People check the first and never know about the second.
Check the connector. Head units work loose over years of vibration, particularly if the unit was fitted aftermarket without being properly seated. Pulling it out and reseating the harness fixes this surprisingly often.
If a fuse blows again immediately, stop. There is a short somewhere, and replacing the fuse repeatedly is how wiring fires start.
It powers on but there is no sound
Work through in this order.
- Check the obvious. Muted, volume at zero, balance and fader wound fully to one corner. Sounds insulting. Solves a real number of cases.
- Check the source. Does radio work but Bluetooth not? That is a pairing issue, not a stereo fault.
- Check for an amplifier. Many vehicles have a factory amp under a seat or in the boot. If the amp has lost power or its remote turn-on lead, the head unit works perfectly and no sound comes out. This is a very common misdiagnosis.
- One speaker dead? That is a speaker or a wire, not the head unit. Fade the sound to that corner to confirm.
It cuts out when you hit a bump
Loose connection, near certainly. Either the harness behind the head unit or an earth point that has corroded. Bumps momentarily break the contact.
Earth faults are the sneaky version of this: everything works most of the time, and you get intermittent cut-outs and sometimes a whine that changes with engine speed.
It resets or forgets settings every time you turn the car off
The stereo has switched power but has lost its constant 12V memory feed. Usually a wiring fault from a previous install where the two feeds were swapped or the memory wire was never connected.
Easy fix once diagnosed, annoying to live with indefinitely.
Whining that rises with engine revs
Alternator noise getting into the audio through an earth loop. Common after an amplifier install where the amp and head unit are earthed to different points on the chassis.
Fixed by correcting the earth arrangement, not by adding a noise filter, though people often try the filter first.
The stereo overheats and shuts down
Head units need airflow. One shoehorned into a tight aperture without clearance behind it will thermally shut down, particularly on a hot day with the volume up. If a unit only misbehaves after twenty minutes of driving in summer, this is why.
When to stop and get it looked at
Stop DIY diagnosis and get help if you have a fuse that blows repeatedly, any burning smell, a factory amplifier involved, or a vehicle where the head unit is integrated with climate control, parking sensors or a factory camera. On integrated systems, pulling things apart to test can lose functionality that is annoying to restore.
When repair stops being worth it
If the unit is a factory stereo more than about twelve years old, the honest calculation often favours replacement.
